A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a black wheel with four spokes in front of a gold sun with seven rays extending upward, all enclosed at the base and sides by a pair of gold wings, tips upward supporting a double looped brick red scroll inscribed SUPPORT ABOVE at the top and ALL ELSE beneath it in gold letters.
Brick red and gold (golden yellow) are colors used for Transportation, the original unit designation. The wheel is a symbol associated with Transportation. Together with the wings it refers to the former units transportation aircraft maintenance and supply general support mission. The wheel also connotes the units function as a hub for providing repair parts support and maintaining reserve stocks of aircraft and aircraft armament repair parts. The sun from the crest of the California Army National Guard and indicative of the nickname Golden State signifies the units assignment to the California Army National Guard. The wings and rays supporting the looped scroll also connote the units motto. The two wings, one wheel, and seven rays allude to the previous numerical designation.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 217th Transportation Battalion on 20 June 1969. It was rescinded on 23 February 1980. The insignia was reinstated and redesignated effective 1 September 2010, for the 1106th Aviation Group and amended to update the description and symbolism.
